And yet no two experiences are the same!

Did your birth go the way you thought it would or was it completely different?

2. This month has been the slowest month so far

I personally cannot believe how fast this year is going, but I’m also not pregnant anymore and spend my days chasing around a toddler and newborn 😂

⁣
Although every labor is different, most of them follow the same sequence of events. Here’s the breakdown of how each labor usually progresses, swipe for a breakdown of each stage and phase!
⁣
✨Stage 1: Dilation
The first stage of labor starts when you begin to feel regular contractions. The first stage is the longest of the three stages and is actually divided into three different phases:
👉Phase 1: Early 0-6 cm (Some sources say 0-3 or 0-4 cm, but new ACOG studies show 6 cm)
 👉Phase 2: Active 6-8 cm
 👉Phase 3: Transition 8-10 cm
⁣
✨Stage 2: Pushing
Your body goes from dilating to pushing as Baby makes its way down through the pelvis. This phase can last from 15 minutes to several hours.
⁣
✨Stage 3: Placenta
The placenta is typically delivered in 5 - 30 minutes, but the process can last as long as an hour. You will feel some mild contractions but most moms are so focused on their babies that they don’t notice much else going on.
⁣
✨Stage 4: Recovery
After the placenta is delivered, you will continue to have contractions as your uterus works to return to normal size. If you are planning on breastfeeding, it is highly encouraged soon after birth. Nursing right after birth will help your uterus to contract and will decrease the amount of bleeding.

Let’s talk about Due Dates! ⁣ Hey 👋I’m Br Let’s talk about Due Dates!
⁣
Hey 👋I’m Brittany! Follow me @informed.mommy for more fun pregnancy, birth, and parenting education 💕
⁣
A due date is an estimate of when your baby will be born. Pregnancy lasts an average of 40 weeks (or 280 days) starting from the first day of your last period (LMP) - But this is an average. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the natural length of a pregnancy to be 37-42 weeks.
⁣
To calculate your due date, you can count 40 weeks on the calendar, or you can subtract 3 months from your LMP then add 7 days. So for example if your LMP is January 1st you would subtract 3 months = October 1st + 7 days… so your due date is October 8th!
⁣
Some providers will change your due date after the first dating ultrasound. That first trimester ultrasound is the most accurate for pregnancy dating, even if the LMP is known. It’s generally recommended to change the due date if the ultrasound is done at 9 weeks or less & varies by 5 days or more.
⁣
Remember, your due date is just an estimate. Most babies are born within 10 days of their due date, and only about 5% of babies are born on their due date!
⁣
So, if due dates are just an estimate, why are they important?
⁣
They provide information on APPROXIMATELY how far along you are in pregnancy. This helps your provider determine:
-When to do genetic testing
-When to administer labs & blood work
-Recognize if those results are within the normal range
-Diagnose pre or post-term pregnancies
-Track your baby’s growth based on how far along you are
⁣
🤱If you’ve had your baby, did they come before or after your due date?
🤰If you are still pregnant, when are you due?

Creating a Birth Plan (or Birth Preferences) is gr Creating a Birth Plan (or Birth Preferences) is great, but things don’t always go according to plan.

It is OKAY to have feelings around your birth.

It’s OKAY to mourn the birth you wanted.

If you or baby needed extra help, had a cesarean versus a vaginal birth, couldn’t do skin-to-skin, needed interventions or decided to use pain meds when you swore you wouldn’t, you are not a failure and your experience does not define you!

Did your birth go the way you planned? Mine definitely did not. Share your story below 👇

Does breast size affect Milk Supply? 👋 Hey! I Does breast size affect Milk Supply?

👋 Hey! I’m Brittany! Follow me @informed.mommy for more fun pregnancy, birth, and parenting education and check out my free Birth Plan Template to help prep for the big day! (Link in Bio)

Short answer: No, it does not!

Your breast size is based on how much fatty tissue you have.

Smaller boobs = less fatty tissue
Larger boobs = more fatty tissue

But fatty tissue doesn’t produce milk, glandular tissue does. Glandular tissue doesn’t correlate with breast size, so some moms with small breasts can produce more milk than others with large breasts, and vice versa.

❗️ BREAST SIZE DOES NOT DETERMINE HOW MUCH MILK YOU WILL PRODUCE ❗️

There ARE things that can influence your supply or make breastfeeding more challenging, some of them include:

🤱🏼 How frequently you nurse
🤱🏼 Latch issues
🤱🏼 Large, flat, or inverted nipples
🤱🏼 Previous breast surgery or trauma (in some cases)

If you are worried about your supply, find a lactation consultant to work with! They will be able to assess the situation and provide individualized advice.

Trying to figure out which birth control option is Trying to figure out which birth control option is best for you?

👋 Hey! I’m Brittany! Follow me @informed.mommy for more fun pregnancy, birth, and parenting education 💕

If you are breastfeeding or pumping, you will want to avoid birth control options containing estrogen (it can dry up your milk supply).

Here are some of the options!

✨IUD (Intrauterine Device) - There are two types of IUDs - copper IUDs (like Paragard), and hormonal IUDs (like Mirena). IUDs are a good option if you are looking for long-term birth control.

Copper IUD: Doesn’t contain any hormones, it’s wrapped in copper & prevents pregnancy for about 10 years. The copper prevents pregnancy by producing an inflammatory reaction that is toxic to sperm and eggs.

Hormonal IUD: Releases progesterone and lasts about 5 years. It prevents pregnancy in two ways:
1. Thickens mucus in the cervix to stop sperm from reaching or fertilizing an egg
2. Thins the lining of the uterus and partially suppresses ovulation

✨Barrier Methods: this method blocks the sperm from reaching the egg using a barrier like:
Spermicide, Condom, Sponge, Diaphragm, and Cervical Cap. A few barrier methods (spermicide, condom, and sponge) can be bought in most drugstores. Others (diaphragm and cervical cap) must be prescribed by a health care professional.

✨Mini Pill (Progesterone Only): It thickens the cervical mucus, which keeps sperm from getting to the egg. Take one pill every day at the same time each day.

✨Natural Family Planning (NFP) or Fertility Awareness Method (FAM): Does not use any drugs or devices, combines the calendar/rhythm method, the basal body temperature method, and the cervical mucus method so you can become more aware with your body’s ovulation and fertile window so you can abstain from sex or use other methods of birth control during that time. It can also be used to track fertile windows when you are trying to become pregnant so you know when to be intimate. For more info on this method, my friend Brooke @simplywell.baby recommends the book “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” by Toni Weschler.
